California Mission Tiles

In 1893, Sister Mary Baptist Russell managed to procure 23 tiles of which a significant representation is from the 21 California missions. These adobe brick tiles, collected from the walls and roofs of the missions, are beautifully hand-painted by her pupils. Unfortunately, one set of tiles, originally stored in San Francisco, was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake – leaving this to be the last remaining set of this rare collection and never before seen in California!

The Sisters of Mercy are committed to preserving history so that the spirit of education can be shared with many generations to come. During their ministry, they have collected a large number of artifacts, in which they used to educate their students and today, share with our community.
From June 16, 2007 through February 8, 2008, the Discovery Museum displayed these artifacts in an exhibit, “Where There is Need, There is Mercy,” to commemorate the Sisters of Mercy’s 150th anniversary in Sacramento.
Some of the items on display included hand-painted tiles from California missions, souvenirs from the Spanish American War, a student’s desk from St. Joseph Academy, visitation books, dishes from early hospitals, John Sutter’s compass, and a number of historical relics from the 1800s.
