Sisters of Mercy 150th Anniversary

Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento

Hundreds of visitors were transported back to the 1850s as they witnessed a re‐enactment of the original five Sisters of Mercy’s arrival in Sacramento during the Labor Day weekend at the 8th Annual Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento. Donned in their traditional habits, the Sisters honored those who came before them, 150 years ago.

The Sisters of Mercy were originally called to Sacramento to care for its orphans and educate the uninstructed. On August 31, they held interactive classes at the Old School House for fourth‐graders of 15 elementary schools, who traveled as far as Grass Valley, to learn about the Sisters of Mercy and their ministries. And throughout the three‐day weekend, vignettes (aka “skits”), performed by our very own Sisters, were held at The Eagle Theatre and attracted over 600 people. The Mercy tent also received many visitors who carried away with them helpful information about the works of Mercy in education, housing, healthcare, and care for poor and the elderly.
