Mercy employees double charitable support to ministries

Mercy employees work in an environment in which compassion and concern for those in need are part of everyday values. Mercy Foundation’s Employees Lend a Hand program empowers them to make a difference in the community through charitable giving to the Mercy hospitals and other Sisters of Mercy ministries.

Longtime Methodist Hospital of Sacramento employee Betty McCullough donated 100 PTO hours to Mercy Foundation to support orthopedic surgery. |
Participation in Employees Lend a Hand has doubled in the last two years. Over the last fiscal year alone, program participation by Mercy General Hospital employees increased by nearly 39 percent; the CHW Sacramento system office and Medical Foundation by 54 percent; Mercy San Juan Medical Center by 16 percent; Mercy Hospital of Folsom by 26 percent; and Methodist Hospital of Sacramento by 51 percent. Over the next calendar year, the program is projected to raise more than $400,000 to support the Sisters of Mercy ministries.
Employees make one-time gifts, payroll deductions or PTO donations. Betty McCullough, a 36-year Methodist Hospital employee, contributed 100 hours of PTO. The 86-years-young PBX operator directed her gift to support orthopedic surgery. Her daughter, Susan Leach, is an inventory control clerk for surgery at Methodist, and her grandson, Robert, is a nurse in telemetry.
Betty recalls that her family reacted positively to her donation: “When I told Susan I was giving PTO to support orthopedics, she said, ‘Mama, I think that’s wonderful.’”
