New Name, Same Mission

Catholic Healthcare West is now Dignity Health

Since 1986, the organization that funds Mercy Foundation’s operations has existed under the name Catholic Healthcare West. That name has officially changed to Dignity Health.

The word “dignity” perfectly defines what Mercy Foundation stands for: showing respect for all people.

Within the health-care ministry, that means utilizing the most advanced medical technology. It means clinical expertise, by way of the nation’s top doctors and nurses. It means working closely with our patients so that they can lead healthy, meaningful lives. And, of course, it means doing all of this with compassion – the type of compassion that includes finding ways to deliver high-quality care at the lowest possible cost, so it’s accessible to all.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because we’re still part of the same organization: not-for-profit and rooted in the Catholic tradition from which our mission, vision, and values were born. However, as a result of changes to our parent organization’s governance structure, which are being implemented along with the new name, Dignity Health is not an official ministry of the Catholic Church.

The local Mercy hospitals that Mercy Foundation supports will continue to be Catholic, directly sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. Methodist Hospital of Sacramento will continue to be non-Catholic. All will continue to be committed to the overall health of the communities we are so privileged to serve; all will continue to have the same hospital names they currently have. The role and structure of Dignity Health’s community, subsidiary, and foundation boards also do not change.
