Mercy Hospital of Folsom
The beginnings of
Mercy Hospital of Folsom
lie deep within the community it serves. In 1960, former Folsom mayor Jack Kipp’s fiveyear old daughter was playing next to her home when she caught her foot in a rotary power lawn mower being operated by a friend. With his daughter’s badly bleeding foot bound in a tourniquet, Jack rushed her to the nearest hospital in North Sacramento.
After their ordeal, Jack and his wife vowed to bring hospital care closer to home. Their efforts resulted in Twin Lakes Hospital, where Jack served as its first administrator. The Sisters of Mercy acquired the 30-bed facility in 1980 when it was on the brink of closure. Nine years later they opened a new 95-bed hospital, located on a 26-acre parcel of property donated by the Cummings and Tsakopoulos families.
As the sole hospital serving Folsom and the surrounding foothills communities, Mercy Hospital of Folsom is the primary healthcare resource for a population of 126,000 residents – a population expected to increase by nearly 50% over the next decade. In response to increased demand for services and growth of the region, the hospital has added a fourth operating room; expanded its Family Birth Center, rehabilitation and occupational medicine programs; and embarked on a five-fold expansion of Emergency Department Services. Recently, the hospital reached its goal of $5 million for the emergency department expansion. Following completion, the next phase is a 21-bed Medical Surgical Nursing Unit.
From free health screenings to community clinics serving the community’s poor, Mercy Hospital of Folsom’s mission of caring for all remains unchanged, even as the community’s need for healthcare expands exponentially.
The hospital has a long history of partnering with the community and relies on generous donations to provide the best possible healthcare for patients.
