Works of the Sisters of Mercy

Mercy's Methodist Hospital of Sacramento

The opening of Mercy's Methodist Hospital in 1973 was the culmination of a decade-long effort to expand health services to the southern part of Sacramento County, then a rural community without any hospital facilities. Now, more than three decades later, Methodist has grown with the community, serving thousands of patients each year.

No longer “the little hospital south of town,” Mercy's Methodist Hospital is a comprehensive medical campus providing a broad range of medical and surgical care. Among its areas of excellence are a Digestive Services program, which includes skilled medical professionals and the latest technology to detect, diagnose and treat all disorders affecting the digestive system, and an Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center that provides comprehensive care by some of the area’s foremost orthopedic specialists.

In 1994, a new program began at Mercy's Methodist Hospital to teach physicians in training - known as residents - primary healthcare skills. Today, the Methodist Family Practice Residency has received the highest level of residency accreditation and is nationally recognized for excellence in training, quality of residents and patient care. A priority of the program is caring for the underserved, a reflection of the healthcare mission of the Mercy family of hospitals, and providing community outreach.

Mercy's Methodist Hospital provides a number of community outreach programs, including, Methodist Hospital School Health Program, created to serve the many children who attend school with illnesses, lack of proper nutrition and hygiene, uncorrected hearing and vision problems, and little family support. And, the free Car Seat Safety Program provides an opportunity for parents to have their child’s car seat inspected and learn how to install them properly to prevent unnecessary injuries in a car accident.

Recently, Mercy's Methodist Hospital opened its new expanded emergency room to significantly boost its capacity to treat emergency patients in south Sacramento. Other changes include three critical resuscitation rooms and a decontamination room. A remodeling of the existing emergency department into a new patient waiting room, registration and other support services will be completed in a few months.

Mercy's Methodist Hospital is committed to serving the growing community of South Sacramento through its expansion plans and outreach efforts. Contributions help support these programs and provide much-needed medical care for the community.
