Works of the Sisters of Mercy

Cristo Rey High School Sacramento

All too often urban young people live in low-income communities with limited educational options. Even the brightest have few opportunities to attend quality college preparatory high schools and thus gain access to higher education. That’s why the Cristo Rey Network™ was created. Cristo Rey is a national association of high schools located in major urban areas throughout the country whose goal is providing an alternative to failing and strife-ridden inner city schools.

In September 2006, a Cristo Rey High School opened its doors in South Sacramento to serve a largely low- and moderate-income Hispanic population. The school, jointly operated by the Sisters of Mercy, The Sisters of Notre Dame deNamur and the California Province of the Society of Jesus, combines a longer school day and year, academic assistance, counseling, and smaller class sizes to prepare students with a broad range of academic abilities for college.

What makes this and other Cristo Rey schools unique is the inclusion of a work component. Students at Cristo Rey spend four extended days a week in class and one class day working at companies all over the city. Through their work, students help finance the cost of their education, gain real world job experience, grow in maturity and selfconfidence, and see professional and personal opportunities – including post-secondary education – which they could otherwise never imagine.

The Sacramento business community has responded enthusiastically to the new Cristo Rey. What is needed now are funding partners to ensure that Cristo Rey succeeds long-term in bringing quality education to Sacramento’s at-risk youth.

Generous contributions to Cristo Rey High School help make quality, college-prep education possible for young people from economically-challenged families. Your gift today will shape their futures and the future of our community for years to come.
