Mercy Housing California

Since the Sisters of Mercy’s arrived in Sacramento, more than 150 years ago, they have provided education and healthcare services to many individuals and families throughout our community. As they have met these needs, they have also come to understand that a lack of adequate housing can create many other challenges for the vulnerable within our community. Mercy Housing California (MHC) works to provide stable and affordable housing for members of our community who might not otherwise have access to this basic resource.
Mercy Housing California has three regional offices located in Sacramento, San Francisco and Los Angeles and provides stable, vibrant and healthy communities by developing, financing and operating affordable, program-enriched housing for families, seniors and people with special needs who lack the economic resources to access quality, safe housing opportunities. Across the state of California, MHC provides services to more than 22,000 people living at 123 properties.
In the Sacramento region, MHC operates 37 multi-family, senior and special needs properties and has helped over 3,000 families build their homes through a sweat equity selfhelp program.
Mercy Housing knows from experience that affordable housing combined with supportive programs improve the economic status of residents, transform neighborhoods and stabilize lives.
While Mercy Housing's core business is the development and management of affordable housing, the core mission of Mercy Housing is to help people build better lives for themselves. In a safe attractive place where they can live and find economic stability, people are in a position to take advantage of the supportive services that help them climb out of poverty. Mercy Housing on-site resident service programs focus on four key areas:
1) Education
2) Health and Wellness
3) Economic Development and
4) Civic and Community Involvement
For Mercy Housing, provision of safe, affordable housing is an important first step to creating healthy families and strengthening the communities in which they live.
