Works of the Sisters of Mercy

Mercy AIDS Ministry Program

The Mercy AIDS Ministry, a supported work of the Sisters of Mercy, arose over 10 years ago to serve disadvantaged people and families living with AIDS. During this past decade, Sister Mary Redempta Scannell has directed this ministry. Her dedication has fostered a higher level of compassion for people living with HIV/AIDS and helped others understand their challenges. In recognition of her commitment, Sister Redempta received the 2004 Award of Excellence from the Center for AIDS Research and Education (CARES).

One part of the Mercy AIDS Ministry includes the gift of dignity for mothers dying from AIDS. Sister Mary Redempta Scannell has tended to the needs of their children for guardianship and addressed each family member’s spiritual and financial needs to ensure a dignified funeral service.

A huge impact is made in the lives of those living with the disease by offering an annual respite from the daily battle. Female clients are given the opportunity to venture to the Mercy Retreat Center in Auburn, and their children can experience the joy of summer camp.

Advances in medical treatment of HIV/AIDS for patients have greatly extended the life expectancy of people living with the disease. The cost of medications is prohibitive for many disadvantaged individuals who are uninsured. To offer assistance with medication costs, Mercy AIDS Ministry has partnered with local pharmacies to bill the ministry instead of the patients, thereby enabling those living with HIV/AIDS to pay their rent and feed their children.

“The Sisters of Mercy are called to support the poor, and that’s what we are doing through this ministry,” says Sister Redempta. “The little bit of help that we can give this group of people – from a bagged lunch to help paying their monthly utilities – does give them hope and help brighten their day.”

You generouse gift will help ease the pain of children and families impacted by HIV/AIDS.
