A Legacy of Caring: The Sisters of Mercy
“Our name is Mercy. Our spirit is compassion.”
– Sisters of Mercy Foundress Catherine McAuley
Devoted to serving others throughout her life, Catherine McAuley used an unexpected inheritance to build a house for religious, educational and social services for women and children in Dublin, Ireland. She founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831, and inspired many to join her ministry to help the sick and the poor.
Today, the Sisters of Mercy continue Catherine’s legacy around the world by connecting those with resources to the people in the community who need support. Like Catherine, their focus is on health care, education, housing, and care for the poor and elderly.
Mercy Foundation takes inspiration from the rich history of the Sisters of Mercy, believing in the inherent dignity and value of all people, and in the generosity of the human spirit.
